      • On the coast of North Carolina there is a tiny island you have to pass through to get to the popular Outer Banks. The island, Cedar Island, was 3 miles in length and had a population of 103 residents when I went there and spent summers as a child. The “beaches” are not pretty as most would say, which is why they were pristine. The shoreline I walked was isolated; I could walk for two hours and never see another soul. Every person knew every other person and even toddlers were turned loose all day because every adult and teenager took care of those younger than they. My dad gave me the keys to our family car and old me, “Make me proud,” which is what I did. I would drive from one end of the island to the other and pick up these kids as late as 11 p.m. and take them home. Cedar Island is heaven on earth to me. My brother lives on Sea Level, another nearby island now. I hope some day to join him there. Right now I live near the New Jersey shoreline and in summer you cannot walk for the tourists. The tourists bring their city attitudes and manners and dump on the residents till Labor Day and all returns to normal. Thank you for asking. 🙂
